Beth Cavener, also known as Beth Cavener Stichter, is an American artist based out of Montana. A classically trained sculptor, her process involves building complex metal armatures to support massive amounts of clay. Cavener is best known for her fantastical animal figures, which embody the complexity of human emotion and behavior.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"The sculptuers i create focus on human physchology, stripped of context and rationalization, and articulated through animal and human forms. On the surface, these figuers are simply feral and domestic individuals suspended in a moment of tension. Beneath the surface they embody the impacts of agression, territorial desires, isolation, and pack mentality "
MAKING OF ARMATURE
Designing a pipe armature will support the figure as effortlessly as possible in order to allow the most dynamic range of gesture and expression.Part of that design means incorporating pipe joints into corresponding anatomical pivot points. This way the solid mass of clay can still be moved and articulated during the sculpting process (ie: a joint in the neck so the head can be turned, joints in the shoulders and hips to allow for further articulation of the torso, etc).
The armatures for the limbs (front and back legs) are made from a single wooden dowel, covered in electrical tape and bent at each joint. This simple armature is then covered in a clay coil and added to the body.
STUDY FOR "THE CHOLERIC"
4-6 oil clay preliminary studies are created before before the final version. projecting the image on the wall determines the final scale. Next, a block poster is printed to scale in oder to plan out the lines of support for the armature.
the pipe armature is assembled and wrapped with electrical tape to prevent rusting and articulated douels are placed in position . the block poster is removed. note that the armature was constructed with wooden boards simulating the wall pedestals in the final installation.
the piece is build solid on the armature. a cardboard insert is in place of the tail and is sculpted seperately out of clay. the form is cuted into different sections and hollowed from inside then joined again. bigger sections are cutout to place in the kiln and fire.
